Michael Gates Gill

Michael Gates Gill is the author of the New York Times bestseller How Starbucks Saved My Life and his new book How To Save Your Own Life.

Mike grew up in a 25 room mansion, son of renowned New Yorker writer Brendan Gill who introduced him to the greatest writers and
celebrities of the time: from E.B. White to Ernest Hemingway to Jackie Onassis. He was given and education at Yale, and a job as a Creative Director of the largest advertising agency in the world.

Today Mike lives in a small, attic apartment with much less stuff in a much more simple life and serves coffee at a Starbucks in his neighborhood.

Mike’s big surprise is that he is happier than he has ever been in his new, simpler life than he ever was in his former “high” life.

“I worked so hard to try to keep up my old life,” Mike says, “But I love my new life.”

“It took me a long time to realize what a gift it is to be grateful for every minute of every day,” Mike says, “and how serving people in even the simplest ways can be such a fulfilling experience.”

Mike’s books are attempt to share his discovery with others who might be experiencing hard times.

“When I was having troubles,” Mike says, “I couldn’t find any book that helped me understand what I was going through. Having been fired, divorced, diagnosed with a brain tumor, and virtually broke I was desperate for any help I could get. I thought my story might help others who find themselves overwhelmed by life’s challenges. I want to let everyone know that sometimes losing the external stuff can bring you a whole new kind of peace and happiness.”

“And I have heard from literally thousands of people who have told me that they have benefited from my surprising story,” Mike says, “I think because my life is irrefutable proof that simple acquiring things does not bring happiness. In fact, the contrary has proved true for me: losing a lot of stuff frees me to be truly me. There is a cost to working 12 hour days like I used to do, or striving to keep up a big house and a big life. There is a freedom to going through life without a lot of heavy status stuff—and just giving yourself the chance to do what you were meant to do, and be who you were truly meant to be.”

Asked if he has any plans to change his life now that his book has become a bestseller and Tom Hanks is planning to make a movie of his life, Mike says:

“Late in life I have found a simpler, happier way to live. I don’t intend to mess it up again!”
